Kootenay Lake Medical Clinic is proud to annouce that, once again, we are the only clinic in the East and West Kootenays offering 7 days a week opening hours. In addition we are now the only true Walk-in Clinic, open to all patients.

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK AGAIN

Monday-Friday inclusive, 9 am until 6pm.

Sunday 11.am ---2 pm

Saturday Hours are:

9:30 am to 5:00 pm

We do have to put the closed sign up before actual closing time because otherwise staff would be staying a long time afterwards so it is wise to get there well before closing time.

We generally have two physicians on duty. However due to the diffculty in finding new physicians for our clinic, there will be more times now when only one physician is available. IHA sent us a letter informing us that because our doctors choose not to exercise admitting privileges at the local hospital, we cannot hire Foreign Medical Graduates (i.e. UK, S. Africa, Australia or any other country in fact, through the period that they require a preceptor). All new applications are from FMGs.

Welcome to the Kootenay Lake Medical Clinic Web site. Most Visits covered by Care Cards. We are situated right next to Walmart, in the Chahko-Mika Mall, by the lakefront, In Nelson. The clinic is open to all patients, local or otherwise. All routine visits are covered by MSP, as in any doctor's office. KLMC is a consumer-oriented clinic and the website is for your benefit. We are always looking for feedback to make this site as useful and convenient for our patients as possible. If you have any questions or comments, please e-mail the webmaster. The Clinic is owned by Dr. John Dale. Do check the links page.

We are trying hard to increase the number of doctors, to better serve the public, we do have a hard job finding doctors these days. We are able to take patients the same as any Family Doctors in the area, except none of our doctors do obstetrics any more. We arrange any needed hospital admissions, and perform tests just as all medical practices do, however we arrange for other doctors or specialists to look after admissions.

What is Kootenay Lake Medical Clinic?

Kootenay Lake Medical Clinic is able to provide medical service 6 days a week for all local area residents and for tourists. We do take some booked visits but hope to retain the Walk-in aspect at all times, due to it's popular reception in the Nelson area. Our doctors provide quality primary care including everything from medical examinations (pap smears, full physicals, drivers etc.) to minor surgical procedures (including suturing, and "lump" removal). Coverage is as per any Doctor's office in B.C. i.e. Medical Services Plan applies to all covered services. The Clinic was opened in September of 1998. This Website will be developing to meet the needs of the 21st Century patient and we will hope to provide information on using the internet to assist your personal health management. We have a great patient and doctors links website--check it out-we welcome the challenge to our doctors knowledge--help keep them all up to date! . Medical Advice cannot be offered directly over the internet. Please make sure to bring your care card, otherwise a visa or cash hold-over has to be taken. Yes you can be seen here if you have a regular family doctor and cannot be seen in a timely fashion.

How long will I have to wait?

Simple answer---less and less as we keep good doctors at the clinic. It is always faster if you do not request a specific physician. All cases at the clinic are seen on first-come first-served basis but we request some flexibility with relative emergencies like suturing, or children in distress. We thank you for your patience in such cases. Please feel free to inquire at the desk for approximate waiting times.

What should I do if my case seems too serious for your clinic?

In an emergency case or if unable to contact a clinic doctor, please proceed to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Emergency Department. Please consider calling first if you are uncertain as to whether a given emergency or suturing job can be dealt with in our clinic. We have had patients remove themselves from the wait at Emergency at the hospital, only to find we could not deal with the complexity of the case at our clinic. Obvious fractured bones are best dealt with directly at the hospital, as well as more serious burns, chest pains.
Who are the doctors working at the clinic?

We have four doctors currently working solely or part-time at the clinic. Click DOCTORS to see the list.

Will the clinic have a closed sign before posted closing time sometimes?

Yes, in order that doctors and staff can get home at a reasonable hour near closing time, we sometimes change the sign over but continue to see the backlog of waiting patients. This does mean that it is not a good idea to show up five minutes before official closing time and expect to be seen.
I am from the US can I get prescription refills?

Yes, if you need prescription refills there is an office visit fee of $80 Canadian and the doctor will see you and assess the recommended prescription from your Family Doctor.
